2. Those who have tried goal setting in the past but were disillusioned as they could not achieve their goals.
Why people Do not Set Goals.
Belief System:
Humans are an outcome of their experience. Previous experiences and their mindset help develop a belief system. Some people do not believe they can achieve big Goals. They do not have faith in their abilities and hence do not want to take chances. Even the thought of doing and achieving something big is offensive to them. Building up belief in your abilities and trusting yourself is the first thing to do for such people. World is full of stories of people at whom world laughed who were able to achieve amazing feats . From business to environment to crazy physical achievements .It is possible if you believe it. "You can summit the biggest mountain by simply taking the first step" and the first step here is Setting that Goal.
Clarity:
As humans a lot of times we are not clear about what we want in life. We like to be given things and many of us are used to being told what to do in life. Those who are free spirited love surprises and enjoy that life of not being tied down by commitments. It is only those few who are very clear about what they want in life who are able to achieve great success. The rest end up working on some one else's goal. Clarity in goal setting is a key element . The more clear you are about what you want to achieve the more effective your goal becomes. The reason why many people do not set Goals or Fail to achieve their Goals is lack of Clarity. Creating a clarity of vision is an essential aspect for life. Although it may take a lot of time to get clarity of vision for your life, these 3 questions may help you get some clarity for setting goals.
What do you want to be in life?
What do you want to do?
What do you want to have?
No Time:
To be forthright Goal setting is for Future, IT is not for now. So when you are setting a goal you have to have patience. Unfortunately the trend these days is we want it now. We are used to this fast service. Fast Food, Fast Communication, Even Fast dating . But Goal setting is more focused on creating for future and it takes time. Setting the goals with wrong expectations may be one of the turnoffs for people who have given up on goal setting. When you are setting goals it is not only about the end result of becoming rich or becoming successful . It also includes the planning , the hard work, the consistent effort over a period of time which is needed to ensure results. If you want all this quickly , then you have the wrong expectations with Goal setting. Goals work when you work on your goals and give it time.
Inability to handle failure:
Goals are set to achieve things a little bit beyond your reach. While trying to achieve them,You will fail and you will fail again and again. But if you don't know how to handle failure you will love to stay inside your bubble of comfort zone and not try anything new or worthwhile. So do not quit at the first sign of failure. To grow you have to overcome failure. You set Goals because you want to achieve something you want to win at something “Winners are not afraid of losing. But losers are. Failure is part of the process of success. People who avoid failure also avoid success.” - Robert T. Kiyosaki. So don't give up if you fail in achieving a goal once, keep trying, keep learning from your failure and yes if you persist you will achieve the goal you have set.
Creating The right Environment:
When we plant a seed, we have to nurture it and protect it from harsh nature till it is strong enough to survive on its own. The same is with Goals. Your goals are your dreams, your inner wishes which are close to your heart. You need to protect them from all the naysayers, the critics, all the negative people who try to put you down. Also you have to protect it from your own negativity, your personality flaws like being undisciplined, lazy, unfocused. This is where creating a conducive environment for setting your goals comes into picture. If you have set goals which matter to you and you really want to achieve them, you will need to create a system which will support you in achieving them. You will have to surround yourself with people who are like minded and are interested in similar pursuits. You will have to remove all the unnecessary people and things from your environment and put things which propel you towards your goals. It may sound difficult but all you have to take is begin, start, take the first step towards your goals by setting them. Many people fail at goal setting as they do not set up a conducive internal environment and personal system to follow up, Check, evaluate, support, measure what they are doing to achieve their goals.
Goal Setting the Right Way:
Yes you read it right .Many people do not set Goals the proper way. It happens very often that we set up goals which are vague. Some think of goals as things good to achieve. So they end up making a list of goals based on desirable things which have nothing to do with their vision for life rather influenced by external factors. Some have very vague goals. Do remember Goals give direction but after setting goals we need to plan for achieving them. Goals such as earning a lot of money are too vague, the strategy to earn a Million Rupees may be different from Lakh rupees. Similarly we have a list of goals which are not needed to be there. Learn a foreign language . Is it a part of your vision? Is it aligned with what you want to achieve in the big picture. Such goals end up sucking our effort time and in the end the outcome does not add a lot of value. Having a big picture and Picking up the goals which will leverage each other is the most effective way for listing out your goals. Too many Goals reduce your focus. Thus ensure that you prioritize which goals to select.
In our Next Post we will see how to Set Goals the Right Way and ensure that we create an environment and system to achieve these goals.
